  7. To Cloud or Not...

To Cloud or Not to Cloud… That is the question!

Do you have a Data Center physically at your location? Have you ever worked at a company that outgrew its current location and needed to move not only it’s employees but also, it’s Data Center? The costs associated with maintaining a Data Center are extremely expensive not to mention the logistics of moving one and keeping your business running during the transition. As more and more companies move into cloud-based platforms the day to day managing of an onsite Data Center become less and less of the norm, giving you more time to focus on your core business. Let’s look at the benefits of having your own Data Center vs. being in the cloud.

On Premise

  • an>Running your own servers means buying hardware. Even though cost can be spread over the server’s life, but it still involves paying for them up front.
  • Having servers lying idle at non-peak times leads to unnecessary expense
  • IT staff spending time on maintaining and monitoring hardware, checking backups
  • Your Cloud Service Provider will utilize their server hardware much better than you would be able to do in your own Data Center.
  • Requires secondary location with additional hardware and data replication maintained by onsite staff
  • Constantly buying hardware with increased demand and no cost savings when the demand decreases
  • Maintaining hardware in your own Data Center means constantly focusing on keeping your network running along with trying to grow your business.

Cloud Based

  • Money could be invested elsewhere within the business.
  • Cloud computing ensures costs are more balanced over peak and non-peak times. With scalability on a shared server infrastructure you’re not paying for un-used capacity.
  • This responsibility shifts to the Cloud Service Provider. This leaves staff in a better position to concentrate on tasks that drive your business forward.
  • With specially designed, power efficient cooling systems and by operating to official environmental standards, datacentre operators work hard to reduce their carbon footprint. This optimization means more efficient use of energy and results in lower costs to customers for power usage.
  • Cloud can help all sizes of organisation to invest in disaster recovery. Cloud-based backup and recovery solutions are huge time savers as well as cost savers.
  • As you grow, your Cloud services grow with you. There’s flexibility to scale up and down according to demand, all the time only paying for what you are using.
  • Cloud allows IT Teams access to a wide range of computer storage and network resources. It’s less expensive than doing it in-house and means you can focus on running your business.
